Brrrr!! What a cold morning! We will have Word Work this week. Please be sure you and your child are filling out and turning in the yellow sheet that is attached to the spelling words.
We will continue to work on the stories about a Place You Love in writing. We will finish these after break.
In math we are finishing up the unit this week and will take the assessment later in the week.
Remember that we are doing a food drive this week as well.
I hope you are all staying healthy and warm! Have a wonderful week!

December!
Welcome to December! Wow, I can't believe it! You should have received a newsletter on Monday about our December news. We are starting Unit 5 in math which is about 3-D and 2-D shapes. Also, I cannot stress enough to have your students practice their math facts regularly. They should say the answer within three seconds.
In writing we are working on a new story about a place we love. The students are really working hard already. I can't wait to see what they write!
In reading I have noticed an improvement in fluency with those students who have practiced. I continue to see areas in comprehension where students could use more help with in depth thinking.
Stay warm!

Word Work
Hello there! Today is Monday so the students were given their new list of spelling words for the week. If you need any assistance please let me know. I can always send home the sheet I teach the children from.
We continue to move along in math. Today we are working on estimating and solving problems without actually figuring out the exact answer.
Also, this week we will continue talking about Tomie dePaola so the students are familiar with the play next week. I still have several permission slips that need to be returned. :-)
Tomorrow when we have our technology lesson the students will make the cover for their stories in writing. I hope to have all of the stories completed by this Friday.
Please don't hesitate to contact me. Thank you and enjoy this beautiful week!

November
Hello! I apologize for not writing weekly. What an extremely busy start to the school year! Now that the assessments are completed as well as conferences, perhaps I can keep my promise of writing weekly. :-)
I sent home my monthly newsletter on Monday. Please let me know if you would like another copy.
We are cruising in writing. Today we worked on "what you do when you think you are done." Students have a checklist they need to follow at the end of each story. Some of the items on there include: re-reading your writing, checking for appropriate capitals as well as punctuation and spelling. We still need to write a dedication page, about the author and create a cover.
In reading the students are working on choosing appropriate books at their level called, "Good fit books" and reading them during Read to Someone and Read to Self. Also, we work on Word Work. Tomorrow the students will sort their words into their notebooks to prepare for their spelling test.
We are starting a new unit in math. We are on Unit 4. Students are learning the multiple ways of adding as well as looking at temperature.
Last, we are doing an author study to prepare us for our field trip on November 17th. We are studying Tomie dePaola.
I hope you are all staying healthy and are enjoying these beautiful days left of Fall.

Word Work Begins
Hello! I hope you all had a fabulous weekend and are enjoying this Fall weather. We started our Word Work (spelling) groups this week. This means that your child will now have spelling homework nightly (hopefully about 5 minutes) in addition to reading and math. Tonight, the students will need to practice sorting their words. We did this in class today so it will be a review for them. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Also, last week you should have received a packet about the Native American project and report that are due on Monday, October 25th. The project and report can be completed as a family. Do not hesitate to ask for help even if you need ideas or resources.
Thank you to those of you who sent in the Activity Money. If you still haven't done so yet, I am asking for $10 per child to help with film processing along with food and supplies for our celebrations throughout the year.
I am having fun getting to know my class. Enjoy your week!

This Week
Hello! Today we began our MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) testing. There are three different ones all computer based. They are in Math, Reading and Language. Please be sure your child gets plenty of rest and has a healthy breakfast in the morning while we continue this testing.
Also, now that we are done with our review math unit, math homework will be coming home on a regular basis starting tonight. This homework should not take very long as it is a review for the students. Please return the homework the following day. No homework is given on Fridays.
We will begin Word Work (spelling) the first week of October. So, the students will have homework for this as well.
I look forward to seeing you again at Back to School Night!

Newsletter
Hi there! I sent home the September newsletter today on yellow paper. I informed you of what we have been working on in the classroom. As of now, the only homework is to read nightly and practice basic math facts. Students should be saying the answer within three seconds. Later, students will have math as well as Word Work (spelling) homework.
We have a tadpole in our classroom! I think it will be perfect for showing the four stages we are learning. Thanks for sharing him with us, Ruben!
Enjoy your week!

First Day
Wow, what a busy day! I can't believe how fast it went. The students were so excited to chat about what they did over the summer. I loved all of the friendly conversations I heard.
Oh, we will have time for snack towards the end of the day. Please be sure it is a healthy one. :-)
Currently, for homework students should be reading a book at their level for about 15 minutes nightly. Also, I know most of the students could practice their basic addition and subtraction math facts. They should get the answer within three seconds.
Please contact me as needed. Thanks so much!
